Supported Lodgings

At YMCA Norfolk, we believe every young person deserves a safe place to call home and the support to thrive.
Our Supported Lodgings Service offers young people aged 18-25, who are at risk of homelessness, the chance to live in a welcoming home with a dedicated host
Entry is via HAF (Hostel Accommodation Form) referrals from agencies and YMCA Housing Services. Supported lodgings are particularly suited to young people who are looked after, leaving care or in crisis requiring emergency admission.

Supported Lodgings offers a safe, stable home environment for young people who are taking their next steps toward independence. Our approach is built around personalised matching, consistent support, and a strong focus on helping each young person grow in confidence and capability.
Personalised Matching
We take great care in matching each young person with a host who can offer more than a spare room. Our hosts provide encouragement, understanding, and a nurturing space where young people can feel valued and supported.
Ongoing Support
From the moment a placement begins, our experienced team is there for both hosts and young people. We provide regular check‑ins, practical guidance, and expert advice to ensure everyone feels supported throughout the journey.
Focus on Progress
Every young person works with us to create a tailored development plan. Together, we set goals that help them build independence, develop new skills, and gain the confidence they need for adult life.
Comprehensive Host Training
All hosts receive thorough training before welcoming a young person into their home. This includes safeguarding, communication skills, and practical guidance. Our training ensures hosts feel confident, prepared, and well‑equipped to provide a safe and supportive environment.

Becoming a Supported Lodgings host is a rewarding journey — and you’ll never walk it alone. From your first enquiry to supporting a young person in your home, we’re with you every step of the way. Here’s how the process works:
1. Starting the Conversation
Once you express interest, a member of our team will arrange a relaxed home visit. This is a friendly, informal opportunity for you to learn more and for us to understand what hosting could look like for you. During the visit, we will:
- Explain how the Supported Lodgings service works
- Talk through your motivations and what a good match might be
- Discuss payments, responsibilities, and practical arrangements
- Share how young people’s development plans work and how you can be involved
It’s simply a chance to get to know each other and explore whether hosting is the right fit.
2. Training Before Placement
Before you welcome a young person into your home, you’ll receive comprehensive training. This includes safeguarding, communication skills, and essential practical guidance. Our aim is to make sure you feel confident, informed, and fully prepared.
Once a young person is referred and matched with you, we’ll arrange an introductory meeting so everyone can get to know one another.
3. Ongoing Support
You’ll never be left to manage things alone. Throughout the placement, the young person will work on their development plan with their Support Worker, setting clear goals and steps toward greater independence. Support for you includes:
- Monthly home visits from the Support Worker
- Weekly phone calls to check in, answer questions, and gather feedback
- Flexible, ad‑hoc support whenever you need it — our team is only a phone call away
We’re here to ensure you always feel supported, heard, and equipped.
4. Moving On and Debrief
When the young person moves on to their next stage of independence, we’ll arrange a thorough debrief with you. Together, we’ll reflect on what went well and where improvements could be made. These conversations help us continually strengthen our programme and better support hosts and young people in the future.

If you have a spare room and a heart for supporting young people, you could change a life. Supported Lodgings isn’t about being a professional carer — it’s about offering stability, encouragement, and a safe place to call home.
We take great care in matching hosts with young people, ensuring the arrangement is right for everyone. Before a placement begins, you’ll receive comprehensive training, and once hosting starts, our team will stay closely connected with you. From regular visits to practical advice, we’re here every step of the way.
Hosting is open to people from all walks of life — families, couples, and individuals. What matters most is your willingness to provide understanding, structure, and a supportive environment.
