Youth Advisory Board (YAB)

The Broadland Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a local commissioning body helping young people to have a voice in their community. The YAB runs for and by young people in partnership with professionals. The YAB’s purpose is to maintain a strategic overview of youth provision in Broadland. Based on the needs of young people aged 11-25.

YMCA Norfolk manages the Broadland YAB in close partnership with Broadland District council. We work alongside young people to identify their needs and help set local priorities. This is through workshops, visiting youth groups, schools and attending community events.

We currently have 15 young commissioners. They help us understand the issues that affect young people. And decide on how we can support them better. The role of the Young Commissioners is to be the eyes and ears of the YAB. They help to evaluate commissioned activities and research youth provision locally.

Who does the YAB help?

The YAB helps to support young people aged 11-25 living within the Broadland District have a voice within their community.

The YAB also supports:

  • youth provision
  • youth and community groups
  • youth workers
  • youth volunteers

working or based within the Broadland District.

How can you get involved with the YAB?

Young People

We are always looking for young people to shape youth provision within Broadland. Young people aged 11-25 and interested in having a voice within their community, can attend our meetings. The YAB is open to any young person who would like to have their say in the youth matters affecting them.

Young people can get more involved by becoming a young commissioner. The young commissioners are free to join, meet monthly, receive training and attend residentials.

Youth groups and organisations

We are always looking for groups to work with us to enhance opportunities for young people in the area. We can visit your group to speak with young people, to get a better idea of what young people would like in their area.

How does the YAB help?

We empower young people to get involved in their community, and give them a platform to voice their opinions. We support young people to be at the heart of decision making where they live. And we enable communities to realise and meet the needs of young people locally.

We believe all young people should feel valued and realise their potential. We provide support and activities for young people to develop skills and confidence in:

  • communication
  • resolving conflict
  • developing relationships with family and friends.

The YAB helps communities to work better together. And increase inter-generational understanding between young people and the adults in their local communities.

What have we commissioned?

The YAB have funded a worker from Momentum. They help to provide additional support for voluntary organisations and community groups in:

  • how to engage with young people
  • supplying training and advice.

Youth groups can access this support through contacting the Youth and Community Worker below.
